Game/30 RVCC Championship

There was a good turnout of nine players who came to play in the Game/30 RVCC Championship. It was held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the club HQ in the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-Op.

It was a hard fought tournament that was not decided until the very last round. The tournament was a 4 round Swiss system tournament.

Sam Kennedy drew his last-round game with Richard White. This gave Sam clear first with 3.5 - 0.5. Hot on his heels was a young man and relative newcomer to the RVCC, Mark Tenzer. Mark scored 3-1, losing to Kennedy in an earlier round. This fine result gave Mark clear second place.

Clear third place was taken by Richard White with 2.5 - 1.5.

No less than five players tied for fourth with 2-2: Mike Huff, Wally Lewis, Vern Robinson, Jeff Robison and Josh Lewis.

Along with our new players Mark Tenzer and his sister Rei, it was also good to see old members return : Vern Robinson and Jeff Robison.

One interesting event that ocurred was when Vern Robinson lost on time to Josh Lewis in a position that looked like a sure draw.

Vern thought he had made time control when he overstepped. Ouch !

The tournament was directed by Charlie Morgan. Charlie is back directing swiss system events again, after about a fifty year vacation from them !

We wish to thank the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-Op for the use of their facilities.

Respectfully submitted,
Charlie Morgan
