As part of its series of special, Grand Prix tournaments, the Roanoke Valley Chess Club recently held its annual WALTER MUIR MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT. This tournament was held on Saturday, April 23, 2013 at St John's Lutheran Church, Roanoke, Virginia. The time control was Game in 90 with 5 second delay.
This annual event honors the memory of veteran club member Walter Muir, who left a small annual grant to the RVCC, in order to help the club promote its non-profit work.
Players from 3 different states attended.
The tournament had 2 sections : Open and Reserve. In the Open there was a tie for 1st by Dominique Myers and Felix McCain both earning 2.5 points with Myers ,Champion, on tiebreak. Tied for 3rd in the Open were Charles Morgan and Stephen Tucker (each 2-1). In the Reserve section Jack McMahon alone won 1st with a perfect (3-0) score. In 2nd place was Josiah Pierce with (2-1).
The on-site Tournament Director was V.C.F. President Andrew Rea. Andy came all the way from Northern Va. to direct our tournament ! The Tournament Organizer was RVCC Vice-President Ray Megginson, who had to perform a variety of tasks over several weeks. The "Impressario" was really kept busy on this event ! Board Director Russell Potter ran the booksale and ran off LOTS of signs ! Club President Mike Huff provided valuable help to Ray over several days in helping to set up the equipment for this event at St. John's.
Free coffee was provided to the players. There were no significant problems of any kind and everyone appeared to have a really good time!
The Roanoke Valley Chess Club sincerely appreciates everyone who participated and made this Saturday Special event yet another successful one in our series.
