Roanoke Valley Chess Club held its Halloween Quick Chess Championship Tournament

On October 19, 2013 the Roanoke Valley Chess Club held its Halloween Quick Chess Championship Tournament.

Gary Myers ran all over the 6-man field and got a perfect 5-0 to win first prize. Charlie Morgan does not like to play in tournaments that he directs, but was persuaded by the other players to play. Without him, there would have been an odd number of players. Charlie finished in second place with A 4-1 score.

Tied for third were Wally Lewis and Lynell Franklin.

The remaining two players were President Mike Huff and Josh Lewis.

At ten minutes for a game for each player, anything can happen and did ! A few examples : Josh Lewis, a very good 11-year old player, played his father energetically and gained a Queen advantage with Larry only having pawns and a Knight. Shortly thereafter however, Josh moved his King and Queen into a Knight Fork, which Larry took advantage of to win the game !

The FINAL STANDINGS were as follows: First place, Gary Myers, 5-0; Second place, Charles Morgan, 4-1; Third place (tie) Lynell Franklin, 2-3; Third place (tie) Wally Lewis, 2-3; Fifth place, Mike Huff, 1-4; Josh Lewis.

Repecfully Submitted,

Charlie Morgan
