As part of its series of special, one-day, Grand Prix tournaments, the Roanoke Valley Chess Club recently held its annual Walter Muir Memorial. This tournament was held on Saturday, May 16 at St. John's Lutheran Church, in Roanoke, Virginia. The Championship Section came with a value of 6 USCF Grand Prix points, with ALL MONEY GUARANTEED! The tournament consisted of two sections, played in three rounds. The time control was Game in 90 Minutes with a 5 second delay.
In the Championship Section, veteran club member and near-Expert Tracy Callis walked off with first place with a perfect 3-0 score. Tracy won a clear $125.00 for his efforts.
Tracy gained his three wins by battling tough games against Bob Day, Josh Lilly and Harold Mitchell.
Also in the Championship Section, Harold Mitchell of Bluefield, W.Va. won 2nd Place, while Ed Boyers of Lynchburg, Va. took 3rd. Both players tied for 2nd-3rd prize money and took home ( $ 87.50 ) each.
In the Amateur Section, clear first was taken in a somewhat sensational manner. Coming in from out of the blue, young Jernel Sharp of Radford, Va. swept the field with a perfect 3-0 score. Jernel took home the 1st prize of $125.00 in this, his first Grand Prix tournament ! Mike Huff of Roanoke tied with Robert Gibson of Covington, Va. with 2 points each. Huff took second on tiebreaks, while Gibson placed 3rd . Each player received ( $ 50.00 ) for their sharing of the runner-up honors.
In all, 6 players took home money and some nice trophies to boot ! The club awarded 6 trophies in the two sections.

The on-site Tournament Director was RVCC President Russell Potter. Mike Huff, Chris Moore and Josh Lilly all provided lots of help. There were no arguments or significant problems of any kind and everyone appeared to have a really good time!
