The United States Chess Federation
The USCF is the official, not-for-profit US membership organization for chess players and chess supporters of all ages and strengths, from beginners to Grandmasters. The USCF represents the United States in the World Chess Federation (FIDÉ), linking US members to chess players around the world. The USCF was founded in 1939 with the merger of the American Chess Federation and the National Chess Federation to promote the growth of chess within the United States. The Roanoke Valley Chess Club is a USCF Affiliate.

The Virginia Chess Federation (VCF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the game of chess across the State of Virginia. Founded in 1934, the VCF is one of the oldest chess organizations in the United States.

Also known as the World Chess Federation, FIDÉ (pronounced "fee-day") is an international organization that unites the national chess federations around the world. It functions as the worldwide governing body of chess. It was founded in Paris on the 24th of July, 1924. Its official motto is Gens una sumus: "We are all one family". The USCF is a member of FIDÉ.
