2008 FRANK CREASEY MEMORIAL

The Roanoke Valley Chess Club, as part of its series of Grand Prix tournaments honoring members key to its existence and success, put on a memorial tournament for former member Frank Creasey. Frank directed many tournaments for the club during the 1970's and 1980's and ultimately donated most of his chess library to the club. Carlos Gorostiaga and Rusty Potter, two of Frank's closest friends, spoke some words about this great guy, who was taken from us at the too early age of 58. We also spoke with Frank's widow Sharon, who was moved by the ceremony. Frank's good nature and infectious sense of humor is sorely missed.

This tournament was held on Saturday, November 8th at the club's meeting place in the Virginia Heights Baptist Church, Roanoke, Virginia. The Championship Section came with a value of 6 USCF Grand Prix points, with ALL MONEY GUARANTEED! The tournament consisted of two sections, played in three rounds. The time control was Game in 90 Minutes with a 5 second delay.

Harold Mitchell of Bluefield, West Va. won the Championship Section outright, taking home the 6 Grand Prix points and the $125.00 prize money with an undefeated 2.5-.5 score. He defeated Richard White in a long, hard struggle on Board 1 in the last round to clinch first place. In the Amateur Section, Ed Grych of Mercer County, West Va. also won clear first, also with a 2.5 point score. Ed scored a tough win against tournament leader Gilbert Stone in the final round.

In all, there were 8 players who won money! The club awarded 6 trophies in the two sections. Congratulations to all of the winners. The Roanoke Valley Chess Club sincerely appreciates everyone who participated and made this Saturday Special event yet another successful one in our series.

The on-site Tournament Director was RVCC President Russell Potter. Chris Moore served as Assistant T.D. There were no arguments or problems of any kind and everyone seemed to have a really good time!
